James Oler, former Bountiful leader of the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) was convicted on May 17, 2019 of delivering his underage daughter to the states for sex. He will be sentenced next month.
While media report the child as being 15, Oler’s sister Esther Palmer, in a presentation earlier this month at the North Vancouver Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), said Oler took not one, but two of his daughters, when they were 12 and 13, to the states for sexual purposes. One of the daughters is now speaking about her experience of Warren Jeffs having sex with her when she was 12, and of his giving her the morning after pill.
Despite Bountiful’s Winston Blackmore and James Oler being convicted of polygamy in June 2018 and given house arrest for six and three months respectively, Palmer stated that polygamous marriages are continuing in Bountiful with authorities not enforcing the law when it is brought to their attention.
In her presentation, Palmer spoke about being raised in Bountiful with no education about politics or society in Canada, or about her rights as a Canadian citizen under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Palmer went on to say girls and women in Bountiful have no concept of consent, of their right to say no to sex, are refused birth control, and have no control over how their bodies are used. They have no understanding that how they are treated is considered abuse under the Charter.
